Metaphor, it is said, is the basis of all language and all meaning. "What is a thing like; what is it unlike?"

Sailors often refer to the Navy as a parent, implying also a brother or sister relationship with their fellow sailors. How unseemly, then, for the Navy to ask a sailor to "carry" it through a crisis, rather than the other way around! How unimaginable the Navy itself would provoke such a crisis, by ordering one sailor to kill another!

Schindler's murder offends not only the law but the natural order of things.
