You "knew almost immediately" the Navy had murdered your son, Allen. Terry Helvey himself--the sailor tasked to kill Allen, and leader of the team which did kill him--confirmed that knowledge for you 7 November 1999.

THEREFORE, we, the undersigned, respectfully call upon you--

• to conduct (or cause) a thorough and impartial investigation into Allen Schindler's death, to determine without preconception, the identity of all persons involved in that murder and the respective roles of each; and

• to determine whether, and which, residents of Illinois can serve with safety in the U.S. Armed Forces (including reserves) and the Illinois National Guard (all divisions); in light of the murders of Allen Schindler, and more recently, of PFC Barry Winchell.

You properly fault the 20-year-old Terry Helvey of Fredericktown, Missouri, for his lack of strength, ingenuity and foresight. Generally, we agree: big things are expected of big men.

But as a mature woman, not under military discipline, and with infinitely greater resources and support than Terry Helvey ever had, but with his aid--you still hesitate to do what you condemn Helvey for not doing nine years ago; namely, taking on the U.S. Navy, calling it to account for the murder of your son.
