RE: EXECUTIONS WITHOUT TRIAL, 1842 and 1992; TERRY M. HELVEY
Dear
Colonel Lyon:
Christmas night, CBS rebroadcast the "Mutiny" episode of JAG. As you
may know, "Mutiny" claims to be a dramatization of a conspiracy aboard
the USS SOMERS in 1842, which resulted in the executions of three
sailors on the high seas. Their deaths by hanging were said to have
been the impetus for establishing the US Naval Academy in 1845, in order
to better train Naval officers. [See, <http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/s/somers.htm>].
On first
viewing this spring, "Mutiny" seemed to offer an obvious parallel with
the Schindler murder. Both involved executions without trial. But a
second viewing Christmas Day also revealed other similarities, which I
wanted to bring to your and the Board's attention.
